The window for NFL free agency opens on March 14 and look for money to be no object when it comes to pass rushers.
In our Talk of Fame Network poll last week, we asked our listeners and readers who will be the most attractive free agent this offseason. We offered 10 attractive options, including a quarterback, some pass rushers, some wide receivers, a blocker and a few defensive linemen.
DeMarcus Lawrence of the Dallas Cowboy won with 26.1 percent of the vote, and fellow edge rusher Ezekiel Ansah finished third with 13.9 percent support. Those two defensive ends formed a defensive sandwich around the top quarterback in the marketplace, Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins. He received 21.7 percent of the vote.
But two of his votes came from Talk of Fame Network hosts Ron Borges and Rick Gosselin.
“It doesn’t matter who else is available or how good they are,” Borges said. “When a starting caliber quarterback is available, everyone else is fighting for second place. Kirk Cousins will get the most money and the most attention.”
Cousins finished seventh in the NFL last season with 4,093 passing yards – his third consecutive 4,000-yard season. He finished eighth with 27 TD passes, more than past NFL MVPs Drew Brees (26) and Matt Ryan (20). He also has rushed for at least four touchdowns each of the last three seasons.
Clark Judge, the other Talk of Fame Network host, cast his ballot for Ansah, who collected 12 sacks in 2017. Lawrence finished with an NFL runnerup 14 ½ sacks last season.
Carolina guard Andrew Norwell received 13 percent of the vote, followed by Rams' cornerback Trumaine Johnson at 7 percent, Patriots' cornerback Malcolm Butler at 6.1 percent, Rams' wide receiver Sammy Watkins at 4.3 percent, Miami wide receiver Jarvis Landry at 3.5 percent, Falcons' defensive tackle Dontari Poe at 2.6 percent and Seahawks' defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson at 1.7 percent.
