As part of an invite-only tryout roster, quarterback Trevone Boykin will join running back Christine Michael as a former Seahawk who will participate in today’s XFL Summer Showcase workout in Dallas.
Boykin, who starred at TCU from 2012 to 2015, signed with Seattle as a priority undrafted free agent in 2016 and beat out Jake Heaps for the backup quarterback job behind Russell Wilson. He appeared in five games during his rookie season, including spelling an injured Wilson in a win over the 49ers, completing 13 out of 18 passes for one touchdown and one interception.
Off-field issues derailed Boykin’s once-promising career, however.
In March 2017, Boykin was arrested for misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession and public intoxication in Dallas. Sitting in the passenger seat, his girlfriend Shabrika Bailey ran their vehicle into pedestrians and crashed into the side of a bar. Less than a month later, he was arrested again for violating his probation.
Despite his concerning behavior, Seattle opted to keep Boykin on the roster, but he lost his backup job to veteran Austin Davis during the ensuing preseason. After being waived, he re-signed with the Seahawks as a practice squad player and signed a futures deal in January 2018.
Two months later, reports surfaced out of Texas that Boykin had struck his girlfriend and broken her jaw during an altercation. At this point, the Seahawks decided it was time to cut their losses and terminated his contract.
Dealing with his domestic assault accusations, Boykin didn’t receive an opportunity from another team and sat out the entire 2018 season unsigned.
Though he’s only 25 years old, Boykin’s past mistakes likely cost him any shot of returning to the NFL. But if he’s able to prove he’s finally gotten his act together off the field, he’s more than talented enough to make some noise in the XFL and resume his professional career.
