Film Breakdown: Where Does Cassius Marsh Fit in Second Stint with Seahawks?

After seeing limited snaps in his first three seasons, a much-improved Marsh hopes to make his mark back in Seattle.

Only two short weeks ago, the Seahawks made their first free agent move to address the team’s pass rushing woes by re-signing veteran defensive end Cassius Marsh on a one-year deal.

Previously selected by Seattle in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Marsh struggled to see the field defensively in three seasons with the Seahawks due to injuries and talent in front of him on the depth chart. He missed most of his rookie year with a broken foot and when he returned to action, Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril remained entrenched as starters and new second-round pick Frank Clark quickly passed him for playing time.

Unable to carve out a consistent role along the defensive line, Seattle shipped Marsh to New England for a seventh-round pick prior to the start of the 2017 regular season. He only lasted nine games with the Patriots before being waived and being claimed by the 49ers.

With his career at a crossroads, Marsh finally found his groove in San Francisco, recording 10 tackles and 2.0 sacks in six games with the 49ers to close out the season. The organization signed him to two-year extension in February 2018 and he rewarded their faith in him by posting career-highs in tackles (38), sacks (5.5), and quarterback hits (14) last season.

But with the 49ers making a splashy trade to acquire pass rusher Dee Ford from the Chiefs last month, Marsh suddenly became expendable and the team released him on March 15, opening the door for him to return to the Seahawks.

After finally enjoying a breakthrough season, how will Marsh fit into Seattle’s plans in 2019? And what should the Seahawks realistically expect from him in his second stint with the franchise?

Check out my latest film breakdown as I revisit four of Marsh’s finest games in 2018 to look at where he’s improved and why he should find greater success this time around in Seattle.
