A. As of Saturday night both CBs J.C Jackson and Jason McCourty were on the roster. Jackson making the roster marks the 15th straight year that an undrafted rookie has made the Pats roster. The highlights include BenJarvus Green-Ellis, David Andrews and Malcolm Butler.
The Pats traded S Jordan Richards to the Atlanta Falcons for a seventh round pick and the Pats also released CB Cyrus Jones Saturday. The Pats likely kept Jason McCourty because of his ability to play corner and safety.
Bill Belichick liked Richards, but could not find a spot for him in a crowded defensive backfield. Belichick can count Richards and Jones as more disappointing second round picks. Jones will be on the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.
This list includes Brandon Spikes, Jermaine Cunningham, Ras-I Dowling, Tavon Wilson, Darius Butler, Aaron Dobson, Terrence Wheatley, Chad Jackson and Adrian Klemm.
B. The Pats have only seven offensive linemen on the roster as of Saturday Night: Ted Karras, Shaq Mason, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Trent Brown (who was absent from practice Sunday), LaAdrian Waddle, and Marcus Cannon. The Pats were expected to keep eight offensive linemen. Matt Tobin, Cole Croston, Jason King, Brian Schwenke, James Ferentz and Luke Bowanko were released Saturday. First round pick Isaiah Wynn was officially placed on injured reserve Saturday. Ulrick John was also placed on injured reserve. Croston and Ferentz have been signed to the practice squad.
C. Even with his 86-yard touchdown run against the New York Giants Thursday Night, it is no surprise that rookie QB Danny Etling was released Saturday. Etling, who was signed to the Pats practice squad Sunday, was more of a practice squad candidate than a candidate for a roster spot. He must improve his accuracy and understanding of the offense to earn a roster spot.
D. Riley McCarron was released Saturday and was placed on the practice squad. Rookie Braxton Berrios was placed on injured reserve so the Pats likely will have only three receivers active in the first four games. Julian Edelman will return in Week 5 after his four- game suspension. WR K.J. Maye was also released Saturday. The Pats claimed WR Chad Hansen and WR Armara Darboh off waivers for their 53-man roster.
E. DL Adam Butler was on the roster bubble, but made the team
F. The five players that were released Friday were not expected to make the roster: DL Frank Herron, WR Devin Lucien, CB Ryan Lewis, WR Paul Turner and RB Khalfani Muhammad, who was only with the team for four days, were released Friday. Hopefully, Muhammad did not sign a lease. The Buffalo Bills claimed Ryan Lewis Sunday.
G. With TE Ryan Izzo being placed on injured reserve, Rob Gronkowski, Jacob Hollister and Dwayne Allen will be the Pats tight ends. The Pats released TE Will Tye Saturday.
H. No surprise that the Pats released RB Mike Gillislee who the New Orleans Saints signed to a one-year contract Sunday. Sony Michel, James White, Rex Burkhead, Jeremy Hill, and James Devlin at fullback round out the running back group. RB Brandon Boldin and Ralph Webb were also released. Webb has been signed to the practice squad.
“I hate it,“ RB coach Ivan Fears said of having to release Gillislee and Bolden.
Asked if he has any advice for his running backs.
“I tell them to keep working hard. I don’t blow smoke up their ass.“
I. Ryan Allen prevailed in the punter competition. No surprise there as Corey Bojorquez never saw the field in a preseason game. The Bills claimed Bojorquez and he will likely be there punter. Good for Bojorquez, he showed a strong leg throughout practice in August and can be a good NFL punter.
J. Other players that were released who were not previously mentioned. DL John Atkins, RB Kenneth Farrow, LB Marquis Flowers, DL Trent Harris, LB Harvey Langi, DL Eric Lee, DB A.J. Moore, DB Damarius Travis, DL Vincent Valentine and CB Jomal Wiltz.
Harris and Wiltz have been placed on the practice squad.
LB Christian Sam was placed on injured reserve.
