Rutgers defensive back K.J. Gray and linebacker Brendan DeVera have been dismissed from the program for violating team rules, multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday.

Gray, a junior, and DeVera, a sophomore, were expected to play key roles on both defense and special teams this season.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Gray recorded a secondary-best 58 tackles last season to go along with two interceptions.

"I wish Rutgers nothing but the best of luck this season, and I know they will do great this year," Gray wrote on Twitter. "I want to thank everybody on the team for welcoming me with open arms and building some friendships that will last a lifetime."

DeVera, who is listed at 6-1 and 242 pounds, notched two tackles while playing in 11 games as a true freshman last fall.

"I would like to re-open my recruitment at this time. ...It's not over," DeVera wrote on Twitter.
