Instinctive Scouting Podcast, with Rob Rang & two-time NFL GM Scot McCloughan

Episode 10 of the Instinctive Scouting Podcast

On this week’s episode of the Instinctive Scouting Podcast, two-time general manager Scot McCloughan and NFLDraftScout.com’s Rob Rang focus on cornerbacks, a position gaining in importance as defenses struggle to contain today’s modern passing attacks.

Scot and Rob break down what made recent top ten picks Marshon Lattimore and Denzel Ward so special at Ohio State and since with the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns, specifically. Scot also draws back on his experiences working with Richard Sherman in Seattle as well as Josh Norman in Washington while Rob looks ahead to the next crop of prospects at the position, focusing on LSU’s Greedy Williams, Washington’s Byron Murphy and Georgia’s Deandre Baker, among others.

The fellas break down which specific traits they think are most important in today’s cornerbacks and compare them to what safeties need. They guys also discuss whether the term “shutdown cornerback” is outdated.

Finally, be sure to listen to the end when Scot and Rob pick out their favorite cornerbacks of all time.

Perhaps not surprisingly, both guys mention Deion Sanders as their top “cover” corner but there are other “old school” players who earned mention for their greater all-around game, with some names going back to the 1960s and 1970s.
