First year executive director Jim Nagy did a fine job with his roster selection and incorporating about a dozen junior-eligible players for this year’s event. He also rose to the occasion when rainy weather invaded Mobile, securing an indoor facility for players to practice at.
This year’s roster could see up to a half dozen players selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Below is a look at the top 10 rated prospects from this week’s practice sessions, along with the NFL Draft Scout 2019 All-Senior Bowl Team:
The Top 10
OLB Montez Sweat, Mississippi State – One player who put in work day in and day out was Sweat, who lived up to his name. He’s got the ideal frame, along with a top-notch game, displaying an array of pass-rush moves and dominating the one-on-one drills. Sweat should hear his name called during the first part of the first round.
QB Drew Lock, Missouri – While he didn’t exactly come to Mobile and light it up, Lock did enough to show why NFL evaluators view him as a potential franchise quarterback. His arm strength and mobility are two big benefits that align to how the modern game is played. Coaches must also learn to live with his back foot throws and varying arm angles.
CB Lonnie Johnson, Kentucky – One of the plays of the week came courtesy of Johnson, who blew up Clemson wide out Hunter Renfrow on a would be bubble screen. His length (6-2), quickness and physical man coverage ability will have teams thinking Johnson towards the end of round one or early round two.
OG Chris Lindstrom, Boston College – A handful of offensive lineman stood out during the week but it was the nasty demeanor and tenacity that separated Lindstrom from others. If he escapes the first round, he’ll be a steal for the team who lands him.
QB Daniel Jones, Duke – The David Cutcliffe disciple is winning teams over in team meetings and interviews. Jones had plenty of positive reps and didn’t hurt his draft stock any but he left scouts with a bit more to be desired. His mechanics and smarts overcompensate for his lack of arm strength, which is why he is receiving first round consideration.
FS Nasir Adderley, Delaware – There’s a strong chance that Adderley is the first FCS player off the board. He answered all the questions about small school level of play and speed with an outstanding week of practice. His ability to play either safety position or nickelback enhances his value.
WR Deebo Samuel, South Carolina – It was all on display for Samuel this week, as he demonstrated crisp route running, fluid change of direction, dependable hands and speed. This is a polished prospect who is ready to make an immediate impact at the next level and also provides experience returning kicks.
CB Rock Ya-Sin, Temple – A transfer from Presbyterian, Ya-Sin shined for Temple this past season with his shutdown play on a weekly basis. He proved just as capable against the step up in competition in Mobile and possesses CB1 type of traits. He’s a darkhorse candidate for the first round.
DE Jaylon Ferguson, Louisiana Tech – The “Sack Daddy” is the FBS all-time record holder with 45 career sacks. His length and long arms allows him to gain leverage at the point of attack. Ferguson also owns great strength and utilized various hand combat techniques to beat his opponents. He projects as a true hand-in-the-dirt 4-3 end at the next level.
SS Darnell Savage, Maryland – Blessed with natural instincts and ball skills, Savage is making a push to be the first safety off the board. Some scouts may view him as a nickelback but his size, aggressiveness and leadership makes him a prime strong safety prospect for the next level. He does a fantastic job at communicating pre-snap reads with his teammates.
