Jets: Draft plugin, surprise and. . . what?

--- NFLDraftScout.com ---

PLUG AND PLAY

DE Nathan Shepherd: Despite being listed as a defensive tackle, Shepherd actually projects as a defensive end in the Jets' 3-4 scheme. And that's important because the Jets need to fill the hole at end left by Muhammad Wilkerson. Head coach Todd Bowles said Shepherd will likely be added to the rotation with Xavier Cooper and Mike Pennel during training camp for the spot opposite Leonard Williams. They also acquired end Henry Anderson, a three-year veteran out of Stanford, from the Colts on Saturday for a seventh-round pick. Coincidentally, Shepherd and Wilkerson (now with the Packers) are listed at the same size, 6-foot-4, 315 pounds.

WILL SURPRISE

TE Chris Herndon IV: This is more about the Jets' lack of experience at tight end, rather than Herndon's skills. That's not a knock on the rookie, who improved his catch total, yards and touchdowns each of his three seasons at Miami. But after losing Austin Seferian-Jenkins to the Jaguars, the Jets' projected starter at tight end is Jordan Leggett, a second-year player who didn't play at all last season because of a knee injury. A former basketball standout, Herndon is an athletic player who should provide a nice safety valve for either Josh McCown or Sam Darnold.

WHAT THE HELL?

CB Parry Nickerson: It's not that Nickerson is a bad athlete. His 4.32 40 time was tied for the best at the Combine with Denzel Ward (the fourth overall pick) and Donte Jackson (a second-rounder), and he has solid ball skills. But the Jets already have 11 cornerbacks on their roster, including Rashard Robinson, Jeremy Clark, Xavier Coleman and Derrick Jones, who are all either younger or the same age as Nickerson. He doesn't have a shot at starting, veterans Trumaine Johnson and Mo Claiborne have those spots locked down, and Buster Skrine will be the top nickel guy. Unless they use him as a return man (something he didn't do in college), it's hard to see him getting much action, or even making the 53-man roster.
