Prescott: Teams do not necessarily need No. 1 WR

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has heard the talk of the team being without a true No. 1 wide receiver since it released Dez Bryant.

Prescott, however, contends that the Cowboys will be just fine provided he do his part.

“I don’t know if any team in the league necessarily needs a No. 1 receiver,” Prescott said, via Pro Football Talk. “It’s about getting the ball out, spreading the ball around, keeping the defense on its toes.”

While Bryant led the team with 69 receptions in 2017, members of the current crop of Dallas wide receivers feel they can more than pick up the slack this season.

Dallas’ wide receiver depth chart isn’t imposing, however, with offseason acquisitions Allen Hurns, Deonte Thompson and Tavon Austin joining Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams and third-round draft pick Michael Gallup.

“I mean the only thing you can do is just get out there with routes on air, things like that,” Prescott said. “We did a bunch together. Me and these young guys have been here before we even started OTAs, getting that timing down so we can get in OTAs and have good feel for each other and now with the defense in front of us, grow off of that and grow from what we’ve already accomplished. That’s the best thing I can do.”

Prescott, who recently said that he wanted to be “the best quarterback that the Cowboys ever had,” has started every game the past two seasons and has posted a 22-10 record. He received NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and helped the Cowboys to the playoffs in 2016 with an NFC-best 13-3 record.

The Cowboys weren’t as fortunate in 2017 after registering a 9-7 mark to miss the playoffs with Prescott throwing 22 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

Prescott has thrown for 6,991 yards with 45 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in two seasons. He has also rushed for 639 yards and 12 scores on 114 carries.
