Dallas coach Garrett offered early assessment of Gallup, Austin during Thursday's media session.

The wide receivers have drawn a lot of attention so far in training camp as the media continues to watch closely to see how the Cowboys will reconstruct their passing game without Dez Bryant and Jason Witten.

Wednesday afternoon’s Compete Period featured red zone and 7-on-7 drills, which Dallas coach Jason Garrett addressed in his pre-practice media appearance on Thursday afternoon.

The media liked what they saw from rookie wide receiver Michael Gallup and Garrett seemed to agree.

“He has flashed,” Garrett said. “He has done some good things. He has had some big competitive catches so far in training camp.”

Garrett added that Gallup’s progress falls in line with the usual ups and downs of rookies.

The Cowboys HFC also gave a sign how Tavon Austin might be used this season. When Dallas acquired Austin, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones referred to him as a “web back,” a description of his versatility. The bottom line is Dallas plans to use the 5-foot-9 “web back” a lot and in a lot of different places.

Garrett told a story about why football fans shouldn’t overlook a smaller player like Austin.

“My old high school coach Fred Highland use to say, ‘When they get off the bus, don’t look at the big guys. The big guys are playing because they’re big. Look at the little guys, the little guys are playing because they’re good.’”
