The selection of Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft generated the likelihood of some type of quarterback competition. Tyler Bray remains running at the No. 2 quarterback position but Mahomes performance with third team reps raises the question if Mahomes might be ready to wrestle the backup job away.
Seth Keysor from ArrowheadPride.com joins the latest edition of the podcast. Seth, Ryan and Chris debate the quarterback situation and Alex Smith’s hot start while asking one defining question: how many games will Patrick Mahomes start in 2017?
If Mahomes and Bray look similar in their practice performance the team may face a difficult decision sooner rather than later. If one quarterback shows separation from the pack, the choice should be easy.
Mahomes would garner more practice reps with the first and second team offenses and face stiffer practice competition. His arm strength and scrambling ability may provide the Chiefs with the better chance to win in the event of an injury to Smith. Preparing him for that possibility returns the best dividends in the long run.
